Top 5 Fishing Lures for Spring According to Mike
15 April 2025

At the dawn of the season opening, we’re sharing some tips to help you prepare for your fishing outing. In the days following the thawing of the lake, the water is very cold, below 55 °F, and this means that we must adapt our fishing techniques. These are effective for this temperature but will change as the water warms up, around 55 to 58 °F (13 to 14.4 °C), which is ideal for trout and encourages them to move around more. It’s important to keep this in mind. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask us for advice. Mike, our site manager (and lifelong fishing enthusiast), shares his 5 favorite lures for this specific period.

First, the fishing technique is important. Whether it’s light casting, trolling, or fly fishing, each technique has its own advantages. The right technique can turn a day with no bites into a very productive outing.

It is recommended to fish near the lake shores, where the water is shallow and potentially warmer. Dead trees along the shoreline are also good hiding spots for fish. Whether you’re in a motorized boat or a fishing kayak, it’s crucial not to rush in too quickly to avoid scaring away the trout.

The classic technique can be adapted to this cold water period:

  • A light casting setup with a Clear Wobbler spoon,
  • A leader of 18 inches (maximum 24),
  • A size 6 or 8 hook with a worm,
  • Line of 6 to 8 lbs maximum,
  • Steel leader is not recommended.

In addition to this approach, Mike shares his five favorite lures for spring fishing. These lures have all been tested and approved in the field, and they are perfect to maximize your chances of success.

1. Atomic Teaser

The very popular PowerBait Atomic Teaser even allows novice anglers to catch their first trout. Thanks to the scientists at Berkley, this lure was designed to have an irresistible smell and taste. Trout love it so much they’d climb aboard your boat just to get another bite.

2. Mepps

The Black Fury is one of Mepps’ best spinner lures. The blade spins closer to the body, making it easier to fish in shallow and mid-depth waters, like those in Lac Berval.

3. Rapala

Rapala lure

Whether trolling or casting, this weighted lure responds to each of your movements and mimics a small fish with its head facing downward. Its more natural swimming motion and “head-down” position become irresistible for the trout in the lake. It’s important to use a small Rapala (maximum 3 inches).

4. Fly

Fishing fly

Fish actively feed on aquatic insects, and artificial flies allow us to imitate this food in a realistic and subtle way. Thanks to their light and natural presentation, they are ideal in cold, clear water where fish are more selective. It’s a good idea to observe what insects are present on the lake while fishing and to choose a fly that looks similar.

5. Jig with a Grub on the end

Jig lure

A lure ranking without the classic Jig + Grub combo? Impossible. This timeless classic is perfect for spring fishing. The grub is a small soft plastic lure shaped like a larva/worm with a tail that wiggles on its own. A lure about 2 inches long is recommended. Adding a 1/8 oz jig gives the grub a realistic swimming motion and makes it an easy, natural prey to catch. Jig with grub is like a ham and cheese sandwich in fishing: it always works.

Of course, other lures can also work well at Lac Berval. But these five are Mike’s favorites and make a great base for spring fishing. Once on-site, don’t hesitate to ask questions to the staff (or Mike himself), and they will be happy to give you advice. If you’re interested in these lures, they are all available for purchase at the reception of the outfitter.
